If you are in crisis

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental-health emergency, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (24/7, free, confidential).

There's something powerful about realizing you're not the only one going through what you're going through. Group therapy provides that — a small, supportive group of people meeting regularly with a trained therapist to work through shared challenges together.

At Peace of Mind Mental Health Inc., our group therapy sessions offer a structured, confidential environment where you can learn from others' experiences, practice new skills, and build connections that support your healing.

How Group Therapy Works

Group therapy typically involves 5–10 participants meeting weekly with one or two therapists. Sessions follow a structured format while still allowing space for open discussion and personal sharing.

What happens in a group session

  • Check-in: each member shares how their week has been
  • Skill-building or topic discussion: the therapist introduces a concept, coping skill, or topic relevant to the group's focus
  • Group interaction: members share experiences, offer support, and practice communication skills
  • Processing: the therapist helps the group make sense of what came up and identify takeaways

Benefits of group therapy

  • You're not alone. Hearing that others share your struggles can be deeply normalizing.
  • Different perspectives. Group members offer viewpoints your individual therapist can't — the perspective of people who've been where you are.
  • Social skills practice. The group setting is a safe space to practice communication, boundary-setting, and relationship skills in real time.
  • Accountability. Knowing others are counting on you can be motivating during difficult times.
  • Cost-effective. Group therapy is often more affordable than individual sessions while still providing therapeutic benefit.

Types of Groups We Offer

Our group offerings vary by season and demand. Common themes include:

Is Group Therapy Right for You?

Group therapy works well alongside individual therapy or as a standalone option. It may be a good fit if:

  • You feel isolated in your struggles and want connection
  • You want to practice social and communication skills
  • You're looking for peer support in addition to individual therapy
  • You want a more affordable therapy option
  • Your therapist has recommended group work as part of your treatment plan

Group therapy is not typically recommended if you're in acute crisis, have severe social anxiety that would make participation overwhelming, or need intensive one-on-one attention.

Ask about current groups.

Frequently Asked Questions — Group Therapy

Is what I share in group therapy confidential?

Yes. All group members agree to a confidentiality contract at the beginning of therapy. Your therapist is bound by legal confidentiality requirements, and group members are expected to respect each other's privacy.

Do I have to share if I'm not comfortable?

No. You're never forced to share. Many people observe for the first few sessions before participating more actively. Your comfort level is respected.

How is group therapy different from a support group?

Group therapy is led by a licensed therapist who uses therapeutic techniques and structures sessions around treatment goals. Support groups are typically peer-led and less structured.
